Assessment 1a - Scheduling to an Audience

Critically comment and evaluate - How effective is the station at serving the target audience of 15-29 year-olds through the stations music scheduling.

Radio one has a vast variety of music, from electronic to alternative, they schedule their timetable very well to fit in all of the different genres of music. During the day they consider to play more known music such as Arctic Monkeys etc. However when it gets to about 00:00 to 2am they start trying to introduce unknown music to their audiences, this will mainly consist of electro and club music.

When it comes to pleasing a certain target audience it gets quite complicated due to the fact that the variety of music is changed a lot during the day. This is a disadvantage to the radio station as certain teenagers enjoy certain genres of music and the confusing alterations can make them change station as they don't play their type of music enough.

However, I feel that Radio 1 do a brilliant job on scheduling their music shows to to target the majority of teenagers genres of music.

Radio 1 do not just play music, their in between talks and interviews/gossip to keep the target audience involved, as idol-ling to a specific role model is very common to teens. During the day they play the top 40 pop music, this is mainly due to the fact they get the most listeners during the day, so to get the maximum amount of listeners they play very popular music. I think this is a clever technique to grab the attention of the listeners, and the use of friendly chit chat between presenters during short breaks makes it very teen friendly and this is a way they target their audience. Another technique they use to draw teenagers in is to talk about social events and other celebrity gossip, this is mainly because teenagers are the largest group of people that take celebrities as role models and talking about them and what is going on in the celebrity world, this is what interests teenagers from ages 15-29.

I think overall Radio 1 are incredibly clever when it comes to targeting an audience and the use of many different genres draws the attention to a large variety of people, which explains why the radio show is so popular. The use of friendly and young presenters also helps the audience feel more at home and relaxed when enjoying their broadcast.

Music Scheduling

1) A music format for a radio station basically tells people what type/genres of music the station plays.

2) An A B C scheduling is sorting the songs into certain categories such as, A being the most played/popular then the B being in the middle and C being the least played throughout the day.

3) The act of organizing music, and when its played, mattering on its popularity status.

4) 'insert pictures here'

5) Radio stations use the technique "segue" as it keeps people interested in the music they play and cuts down the amount of casual chit chat from radio presenters, making there music play list longer meaning they can fit more music into a certain time period.
